Thanks John,

My friend has gathered all the required documents and taken them to the sous prefecture in Bergerac. His French is not so good but, without explanation, he has been told to telephone Perigeux prefecture and also to take his car to the DRIRE (he thinks). Looking at this website you have recommended (it makes no sense in English by the way) it appears that this process now takes place by post. The sous prefecture did not keep any of his documents nor did they take copies, so I think I will have to return there with him to help understand what the difficulty is. It is obviously a new system for 2nd hand EU imports (since Oct 15th 2009) so perhaps that is the problem! I will post the outcome as it may help someone else to know if the process has changed. I remember clearly just taking all my documents to the prefecture in Perigeux and being issued with the carte gris after a short wait.

Regards, Lynda

The system applies to all vehicles, whether second hand imported or not. It started in April this year for new registrations and then from 15 October for all changes of ownership.

It would be easier to go into Périgueux to make the applicaton but the Carte Grise will still be sent by post.

The reference to DRIRE is possibly for a Certificate of Conformity, which is required.

Depending on the age of the vehicle it may be that DRIRE have it on their registers and can issue a certificate. If not then it will need to come from the manufacturer.

That's presuming your friend doesn't already have a Certificate of Conformity. If she/he does then the reference to DRIRE is a red herring.

I am taking it also that the vehicle is a "standard" motor car.
