Wild boar and moles causing havoc!!

Could anyone help re advice on what to do re moles and boar digging up our land? We have recently had a swimming pool installed, which means that around the paving there is a wide strip of bare earth (yet to be re-seeded but waiting to be able to do so!). This is currently a playground for wild boar and moles - the whole area is now all dug up and a mixture of earth piles and loose earth.

Any advice would be so welcome - just don't know what to do!!

Are you sure that it is wild boar and not badgers? Whether boar, badgers or moles they will all be worm chasing! The drastic move is to kill the worms! However worms are good for the soil and your soil must be in reasonable condition and this ultimate solution is a lot of poison!.

If it is badgers you could distract them with pea nuts which are a preferred alternative to worms.

Wild boar can be controlled by an electric fence. The wires do not have to be very high and and a mains based unit will cost around €100.

The moles may only be one mole as each mole has a large underground territory covering a large number of square metres. There a plenty of mole removal techniques varying from human hair down the holes to individual mole mines. However if you are in a densely populated mole area they will quickly re colonise and renovate and extend existing burrows and throw out more soil.

I have adopted a laissez faire attitude and rake out the spoil heaps on a regular basis, this seems to work in that we do not get too much damage.

Beware! - moles hating can become an obsession!

Good luck

If wild bore, contact the local Chasse or speak to the Marie, they should sort out the bore. I shoot and eat all the rabbits that trespass on my grass and veg yum yum.

Hi, on moles, there is only one thing that works in my experience - the 'Le detaupeur'. This is a small explosive charge device, not cheap (€60-70 ish) but they do work! Regards

Thanks everybody! The explosive charge sounds worthwhile; however, would the problem re-emerge again soon, do you think, meaning we will be spending 70 euros on a regular basis??!!

There are also people out there advertising a guaranteed cure for mole probs (I have only just noticed them in the paper!). What methods do they use, and any experiences of them being effective?
