Starting from scratch what kit do I need to get French television? (in addition to the TV that is)!

An aerial and a TV licence!

If you have one of the internet packages (like Orange) with a good ADSL connection for example, you can install a dish instead and at least get the primary French channels through their encoder.

I am a bit confused!! We had someone put our dish up for UK TV, he took the French aerial down as he said it was not going to be of any use as it was all changing to digital.

I have a French TV and an aerial and I have 5 channels with a clear picture. You can buy a set top box which will provide you with more channels. France is going digital but not for a couple of years in this area I believe but I'm sure others will know more. You pay for your TV licence via your tax d'habitation.

- If you have a standard telly then you can use the standard aerial until "switchover" and you get 6 channels odd.

- If you have a modern (French) telly with built-in FRENCH digital freeview then you need a modern aerial but you get 20 odd channels.

- If your French TV set is without built-in "freeview" then you need a standard, cheap set-top box and satellite dish (for 6 odd channels)

or

- buy a modern "freeview" set-top box listing the 20 odd channels you get on the packaging - and a modern aerial.

And you can still use the TV for UK FREESAT or SKY with the relevant box (which you need to get from UK) and a DISH, even if it is a French TV set - by switching one box off and the other on etc etc.

I asked an ex-pat electrician. Didn't have a clue. I asked an ex-pat installer - wanted a fortune. Eventually got a French in and he charged a fortune. If I had known then what I know know!

PM me if still stuck and I will try to explain before drinking any wine. Ha! Good luck all.
